Christmas lullaby

I’ll fill your cradle
fine straw
without any husk,
without any dust.
I’ll light a good fire
scented lavender
to make your sleep sweet.

I’ll cover your body
with very white sheet
half woven with glory,
half sewn with crosses.
I’ll make for you with soft
tufts of wool
a mantle for the feet.

I’ll sing to you a lull
with the sweetest voice,
and when you fall asleep
I’ll kiss your forehead.
Then, on tiptoe,
I’ll close the door
so don’t keep you awake
the noises of the world.
