Abstract

This essay is a critical analysis to the diagnostic criteria from DSM. These are focused on the phenomenological and the empirical, in a reductionist medical manner. Centered around the biological, supposedly genetic, placing all psychiatric issues within the brain. They work with the medical discourse. Knowledge held by the doctor. This is one of the differences with psychological methodology and its discourse. The psychological discourse works with the repressed, presented in the creations of the unconscious.

They differ in the way they understand mental illness, in the employed discourse, in the inflation of psychiatric concepts, and in their inaccurate terms, as warned by Henry Ey’s mistrust for this approach. There is a specific medication for every psychiatric disorder. They are not concerned with what causes symptoms but with eliminating them as soon as possible. We refer to the harshest critique it has received. We will point out some differences with the psychoanalytic approach, with its clinical procedure and the way to tackle mental pathology.
