Presentation of Tosquelles Conference

[Automatic translation from Spanish]:

On 10 June, we presented the first Day of the journal «Intercambios/Intercanvis Psychoanalysis papers».

The Day was raised as a double commemoration. Firstly, to welcome the fact that the «Intercambios/Intercanvis Psychoanalysis papers» Association has been on its way for 25 years — from 1998 to the present — and that the magazine we are publishing has reached 50 issues.

We would like to point out that this has been possible thanks to all the association’s subscriber members, support to the magazine. The association consists of 126 members and the board representing them was responsible for presenting the Day. So, a big thank you to all the members, many of whom were present at this event.

Secondly, in recognition of those people and institutions who, despite the difficulties of the current situation, want to continue to sustain a complex thought, a critical thought, a thought that argues in depth and rigorously what it raises, that allows for debate and the exchange of ideas, listening and integrating the diversity of theoretical constructs, working lines and schools. In short, it can connect with the different forms of expression of culture in today’s society.

Why did we want to dedicate our first Day to Doctor Tosquelles? Because we believe that he represents us and that his professional and personal career is a great model of what the «Intercambios/Intercanvis Psychoanalysis papers» Association wants to defend in the world of psychoanalysis and culture in general; as we have said, critical, creative, exhaustive thinking, fruit of desire and innovation and capable of being included in the Community and social.

To understand the connection between our Association and Dr. Tosquelles, we want to present the magazine’s way of thinking. In fact, it’s a rare psychoanalysis magazine. On the contrary, it is very unique and for various reasons:

The first is that publication belongs to members who, for the simple reason of their being so, have the right to publish without having to go through the sieve of a reading committee. Very often, the institutional structures that make up most journals, whether psychoanalysis or not, condition and suppress many works and research that would probably be more creative if published in a less superegoie context, adjusted to peer review, reading committee review, etc.

Another specific feature that gives identity to the magazine is bilingualism. All articles can be published in Catalan or Spanish. We consider our society to be bilingual and, for this reason, we intend to make it easier for all subscribers to communicate their ideas in the language in which they feel most comfortable.

«Intercambios/Intercanvis Psychoanalysis papers» originates as a result of the desire and will of the members, psychoanalysts or people related to psychoanalysis, grouped around the purpose of finding a freer and more multitheoretical space, a space in which to exchange current knowledge and experiences through writing. It wants to be an instrument for discussion among members that is useful for commenting, contrasting, and extending the articles that are published.

The magazine’s pace of publishing has always depended on the number of articles the members produce and, from its inception in 1998 to the present day, two issues have been published per year. As we have said, thanks to the work, support, and effort of the members and many boards before the present one, we have reached issue 50. We hope to be able to continue and to reach many more.

Over the years, we have seen that, in addition to essay articles on a subject or an author, there has been a significant increase in articles on applied psychoanalysis, that is, explaining how psychoanalysis is embedded in the care of Community mental health and mental health in general. There are also articles relating literature, music, painting to current psychoanalytic thinking.

The proposal of the Association and of the magazine therefore has a pluralistic, multidisciplinary criterion, integrating everything that concerns the field of the psychic. We are interested in complexity and diversity, and that is why we wanted to dedicate these first conferences to Dr Tosquelles, whom we consider to be a paradigm of all this.

A bilingual Tosquelles. He was always attached to leftist politics through his anarcho-syndicalist militancy, his membership in BOC and POUM, a Republican who was convinced and committed and exiled for this. Psychiatrist in internment institutions, but already, from the beginning, introducing the first experiences of reciprocal relations with the community. Interested by an eclectic and heterodox theoretical position, following these principles, “Because in psychiatry we deal with heterogeneousness”, in which psychiatry, psychoanalysis, institutional theory of Gestalt, Freud, Lacan, Jung, Janet, Ferenzci, Balint, Ajurriaguerra, Ey, etc. converge. He developed multidisciplinary therapeutic communities to eventually create Institutional Psychotherapy. His interest in humanizing the psychiatric institution led him to use an eclectic therapeutic approach where various techniques converge. His approach of including the sick person in social and social and art in the institution is the original of all the Community’s mental health care and the multidisciplinary networking that we are currently using.

The Conference was also multitheoretical and, as we will read in the monograph dedicated to Tosquelles in this issue number 50, we are looking at Dr Tosquelles’ figure in a pluralistic and very rich way. So, my congratulations to «Intercambios/Intercanvis Psychoanalysis papers», to the members that belong to it and to people like Dr Tosquelles.
