The importance of psychological support in perinatal grief

Abstract

The work of mourning in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In this paper we present some reflections on the work of mourning in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In preterm birth, the mother often experiences feelings of loss in front of the lack of an expected and satisfactory reply of her baby. These feelings, that are experienced with disappointment and guilt, interfere with the ability of the mother to recognize the needs of her child, so that a fracture occurs in the bond between them. A particularly critical case takes place when a neonatal death occurs and requires specific processes that go beyond any mourning process, as we reflect on a case.
