The painting La Derelitta (The Abandoned), attributed to Sandro Botticelli’s workshop, shows a solitary figure sitting at the locked gate of a monastery. This image will be the starting point for a psychoanalytic interpretation, using Kohut as the main theoretical model.
Abandonment may be definitive, causing irreversible damage. However, if treated well and on time, it may be only a moment of a person’s evolutionary process, and can represent it through art, as in this case, and manage to move humanity eternally.
